Creating a Healthy Habitat: Room Temperature Guidelines

Optimize room temperatures for a comfortable and healthy home year-round. Find ideal ranges for bedrooms, kitchens, and more. The ideal temperature for your home relies on a number of variables, including location, season, and personal preferences. In general, the healthiest temperature for your house is between 68- and 72-degrees Fahrenheit. Most people can tolerate this temperature range, and it can help prevent health problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and hypothermia.

However, the optimal temperature for each room in your house may vary. For example, the bedroom should be cooler than the rest of the house, with a temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range can help you sleep better and reduce the risk of developing sleep-related health problems. These recommendations will help you and your loved ones stay comfortable and healthy throughout the year.

Adjust Home Temperatures as Needed

Most people generally find a temperature range between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit comfortable. However, it’s important to note that the optimal temperature may differ for different individuals or rooms in the house.

For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a temperature of about 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a healthy, fully-dressed adult. This temperature is considered optimal for sleeping as well. However, they suggest that the disabled, elderly, or young should be in rooms no colder than 68 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid health risks. Moreover, if you or someone in your household has allergies or respiratory issues, keeping the room temperature above 61 degrees Fahrenheit is best. Low temperatures can cause respiratory problems, especially in people with asthma or allergies.

Optimal Temperature by Room

Adjust the temperature in specific rooms for optimal health and comfort based on where you spend the most time. Aim for the following temperatures:

  • Living Room: Maintaining a temperature range of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the living room is generally advised for optimal health. Lower temperatures can make you feel cold and uncomfortable, while higher temperatures can cause overheating and dehydration.
  • Bedroom: Since you spend most of your time in the bedroom at night, keeping it comfortable and healthy for sleeping is crucial. To achieve this, set the temperature between 62-66 degrees Fahrenheit. This range will help regulate your body temperature while you sleep and prevent sweating or shivering.
  • Kitchen: The kitchen should be less warm than other rooms in the house due to increased activity levels while cooking or baking. The ideal temperature range for the kitchen is between 60-64 degrees Fahrenheit. This range will keep you comfortable while in the room and can help extend the shelf life of certain food items.
  • Bathroom: Set the bathroom temperature lower than other rooms in your rental home to prevent mold and mildew growth. An ideal range is in the low 70s. This range can help discourage fungi from growing and eliminate any musty odors.

Always pay attention to what your body is telling you. The temperature needs to be adjusted if you feel too hot or cold. Additionally, it may be a sign that the temperature is not optimal for your health if you experience symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or dry skin.

To prevent heat loss during the winter, make sure your rental home is adequately insulated. Second, to keep your home cool in the summer, use blinds or curtains to block out the sun. You could use a programmable thermostat to set the temperature automatically based on your needs and plan.
